đź“– Parent Handbook
Welcome to Sunnyside Daycare and Afterschool Club! We aim to provide a caring, stimulating, and homely environment where children can flourish emotionally, socially, physically, and intellectually.
This handbook outlines key information to help your child settle into preschool and provide you with guidance on our procedures, policies, and expectations.
Settling in Procedure
We work in partnership with parents to ensure a smooth transition. Settling sessions will be arranged before the start date, with opportunities to discuss routines, preferences, and needs with your child’s key person.
The Key Person Approach
Each child is assigned a key person to support their development and provide consistent care. This helps children build bonds and ensures parents receive regular feedback.
Your Child’s First Day
Parents must provide nappies, wipes, spare clothes, and preschool uniform (grey/black trousers, white shirt, grey jumper, black shoes). All personal items must be labelled.
Parent Partnerships
Effective communication is central. Parents are encouraged to check noticeboards, newsletters, and discuss concerns with key persons or management at any time.
Nutrition
We provide a nut-free environment with balanced meals and snacks. Parents must provide formula or pureed food for infants as needed. Care plans will be created for children with allergies.
Accidents, Illnesses & Medicines
First aid-trained staff will manage accidents. Parents will be contacted immediately for serious incidents. Children may not attend with infectious illnesses. Prescription medicines may be administered with consent.
Safeguarding Children
We follow strict safeguarding policies, including DBS checks for all staff and regular child protection training.
Special Educational Needs (SEN)
The SENCO works with parents to provide additional support and seek external assistance if required.
Behaviour Management
We promote positive behaviour, encourage sharing and respect, and use age-appropriate strategies. Physical or emotional punishment is strictly prohibited.
Equal Opportunities
All children are treated with respect, regardless of race, religion, gender, or ability.
Complaints Procedure
Concerns should first be raised with the preschool manager. If unresolved, parents may contact Ofsted on 0300 123 1231.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parent / Carer Code of Conduct Policy
At Sunnyside Daycare we are extremely fortunate to have supportive and friendly parents. Our parents recognise that educating children is a partnership between parents, nursery practitioners, and the local community. This policy reminds parents, carers, and visitors about the expected conduct to ensure we continue to flourish, progress, and achieve in an atmosphere of mutual understanding.
Guidance
- Respect the caring ethos and values of our nursery.
- Work in partnership with practitioners for the benefit of children.
- Treat all members of the nursery community with respect, setting a good example.
- Clarify issues peacefully and avoid confrontation.
- Correct your own child’s behaviour in public when necessary.
- Approach the nursery to resolve concerns rather than using threats or aggression.
Unacceptable Behaviour
We cannot tolerate parents, carers, or visitors exhibiting the following:
- Disruptive behaviour interfering with nursery operations.
- Use of loud, offensive, or threatening language.
- Threats or actual bodily harm to staff, parents, or children.
- Damage to nursery property.
- Abusive or threatening messages (email, text, voicemail).
- Defamatory or offensive comments on social media.
- Physical aggression towards adults or children.
- Approaching another child to chastise them.
- Smoking, alcohol, or drug use on premises.
- Dogs brought onto nursery premises.
Should such behaviour occur, the nursery may contact the appropriate authorities and, if necessary, ban the offending family from the premises and/or terminate the childcare contract. Thankfully, such incidents are rare. Parents are expected to ensure anyone collecting children is aware of this policy.
🍼 Settling in Procedure
We work closely with parents to ensure a smooth transition into preschool. The manager or deputy will arrange settling-in sessions before the start date. During these sessions, your child’s key person will discuss routines, preferences, and needs. The number of sessions will be agreed with parents. For the first two weeks, parents/carers may accompany children into care rooms if needed.
Dropping / Picking Up
After the settling-in period, parents should wait in the reception area during drop-off and collection to maintain calm routines. Staff will hand over children with their belongings and provide feedback to parents.
